Delete Your Account and Data

Aureloo deletes your account from inside the app. Open Profile, tap Delete account, confirm in two steps, and your account record, everything that account holds on that phone, your Google Drive sync file, and your nickname and inbox on our server are gone.

If you can no longer sign in, we will do it for you by email instead. Both routes are below, along with exactly what disappears, what survives and why, and the parts only you can reach.

Delete it yourself, in the app

Open the Profile tab and scroll to the bottom of the settings list. The last item is Delete account, in red.

Tapping it opens a screen that lists what will go and what will stay. Nothing has happened yet. Tap Delete account there and one more dialog asks "Delete your account?", offering Cancel and Delete permanently. Only that last tap removes anything. There is no cooling-off period afterwards and no way to undo it.

If it has been a while since you last signed in, Aureloo asks you to prove it is you before it goes ahead. If you use an email address and password, it asks for that password once more. If you signed in with Google, the Google sign-in sheet opens again. This is Firebase's rule rather than ours, and cancelling out of it deletes nothing.

If you signed in with Apple, the Apple sign-in sheet opens every time, however recently you signed in: Aureloo needs Apple's fresh answer to withdraw its Sign in with Apple access as part of the deletion. Cancelling out of it deletes nothing either.

What the app deletes

  • Your Aureloo account itself — your email address, your user id, and the display name and profile picture that a Google sign-in supplied. The record is removed from Firebase Authentication, and we keep no spare or shadow copy of it.
  • Everything that account holds on that phone — your words, your folders, your grammar notes and your review history. They are erased outright rather than merely marked gone.
  • What the phone remembers about your subscription — the cached note that this device was entitled to Pro, and the link between this handset and your account at the purchase service. Your purchase record at Google Play or the App Store is not touched; see Purchases below.
  • Aureloo's Sign in with Apple access, if you signed in with Apple. Aureloo tells Apple to withdraw it, so that Aureloo no longer appears among the apps that use Sign in with Apple in your Apple Account settings.
  • Your Google Drive sync file, when Aureloo can still reach it from that phone. It deletes your account's file in the hidden application folder, including any copy sitting in the Drive bin. Files that other Aureloo accounts keep in the same Drive are left alone.

What is removed on our server

Deleting the account record sets off a clean-up on our server. It needs nothing from your phone, normally finishes within a minute, and is tried again if it fails. It removes:

  • your nickname — the name becomes free for someone else;
  • your sharing profile — the Accept shared items switch and, if there was one, the mark that stopped the account from sending — and your own list of blocked senders;
  • everything that was waiting in your inbox, content included;
  • your send counts, the hourly counters and the count of wrong promo codes;
  • the note of when your gift time ends;
  • your record as an inviter — the number of counted friends, the rewards and the hashed ids of your own phones. A reward not yet granted is never granted.

Your invite code is retired. It stops working, and the code itself stays reserved, with no account attached to it, so that it is never given to anyone else. A nickname we had reset stays reserved in the same way.

What stays on our server

These records stay, filed under the user id of the deleted account — a random string that no longer leads to a name or an email address:

  • Each use of a promo code: the code, the time and the period it gave.
  • The record of an invitation you accepted: the inviter's user id, the invite code, when you accepted, the calendar dates you practised on during the 14 days, the hashed id of your phone (from an iPhone, instead, the two bits Apple reported, whether we set the first, and a one-way scrambled form of the one-time token), and how it ended.
  • In the records of friends you invited: your user id as their inviter, and your invite code.
  • Hashed phone identifiers of Android phones, each with your user id and a time: the phone you accepted an invitation on, and the phones you opened the invite page on.
  • Items you sent that the recipient has not yet dealt with. They are not called back. The recipient sees them without your nickname, as from a "deleted account", until 24 hours after you sent them. The server's copy — the content and your user id — is then removed by automatic expiry, normally within a further day.
  • Your entry on other people's block lists — your user id and a time — until that person next opens their profile.
  • Reports, each deleted 30 days after it was made. A report you made keeps your user id. A report about something you sent keeps your user id, your nickname at the time, the title and, until we close the report, a copy of the content.
  • Our own log of actions. Entries about your account keep your user id, and entries about stopping it from sending or resetting its nickname keep the nickname at the time.
  • Technical logs, for 30 days: your user id, the ids of records (for a promo or invite code, the code itself) and outcomes, with no nickname, title or content.
  • The purchase service's customer record, under your user id; see Purchases below.

None of this holds your name or your email address; a nickname appears only where the list says so. On an iPhone, the two DeviceCheck bits that Apple keeps for the phone — whether it has been used to accept an invitation, and whether it is the phone of someone who invites friends — stay with Apple for good, as we never reset them; they belong to the phone, not to an account, and hold no user id, name or email address.

To have the rest removed, write to privacy@aureloo.com from the email address of the account. Waiting items, reports and technical logs expire by themselves. The other records we remove when you ask: we delete the promo-code uses, the invitation and phone records, your entry on other people's block lists and the purchase service's customer record, and we strike your user id out of your friends' invitation records and your user id and nickname out of our log. If you can, write before you delete the account, or ask us in the same message to delete it for you: once the account record is gone, that address no longer leads us to your user id.

For up to an hour after the deletion, a phone on which the app is still signed in to the account can make the server start the hourly counters again. They hold numbers only. Nothing else comes back; only a request that reaches the server at the very moment of the deletion can leave behind a little of what the clean-up removes — for example a nickname, a sharing profile, an invite code, or an item being sent at that moment, still carrying your nickname until it expires — which we remove when you ask.

If Aureloo can no longer reach your Drive

Aureloo does not promise something it cannot do. If the Drive permission has been withdrawn or has expired, the screen says so plainly before you delete anything, and tells you again afterwards: the sync file stays where it is, and only you can remove it.

To remove it yourself, open the Google Drive app and go to Settings → Manage apps → Aureloo → Delete hidden app data. The same thing can be done in a browser from myaccount.google.com/permissions, which takes away Aureloo's access and its stored app data together.

If something goes wrong

If the account record itself cannot be deleted — you are offline, or the confirmation did not go through — then nothing else is removed. Your words, your Drive sync file and your account are all still there, the app says so, and you can try again. If you signed in with Apple, Aureloo's Sign in with Apple access may already have been withdrawn; signing in with Apple again restores it. The steps run in that order deliberately, so that a failure is never a half-deleted account.

No Delete account in your Profile? Then the copy of Aureloo on that phone is an older build. Update the app, or use the email route below — that one works whatever you are on.

Or ask us by email

This is the route for anyone who cannot get into the app — a lost password, a lost phone, or any other reason you cannot sign in. It needs nothing but an email.

Email privacy@aureloo.com from the email address on your account, with the subject line "Delete my account". You do not need to explain why.

If you signed in with Google, send the request from the address of that Google account, so that we can be sure the request is yours. If you cannot send from that address, tell us and we will find another way to confirm it — we will never ask you for your password.

If you signed in with Apple and chose Hide My Email, your account holds the address Apple made for us, not your own. Write from the address it forwards to and tell us the Apple address too; your iPhone shows it in your Apple Account settings, under Sign in with Apple.

What we delete: the same account record the app deletes. That is the user ID, your email address, your display name and your profile photo URL — everything listed in our privacy policy. It is removed from Firebase Authentication, and we keep no spare or shadow copy. Removing it sets off the same clean-up on our server as the in-app route, with the same list of what goes and what stays. If you want what stays on our server removed as well, say so in the same message.

How long it takes: we aim to complete deletion within 30 days of receiving your request, and usually much sooner. We will email you to confirm when it is done.

What the email route cannot do: we have no way to reach into your phone or your Google Drive, so deleting your account this way leaves both untouched. The next two sections say how to clear them yourself, and you can do either without doing the other. Nor can it withdraw Aureloo's Sign in with Apple access: if you used Apple, end it yourself in your Apple Account settings, under Sign in with Apple.

Delete the data on your phone

The in-app route already does this for the phone you delete from. This section is for a phone you did not delete from, or for clearing your data without deleting your account.

Your words, folders, grammar notes and practice history live in a database on the device. We do not have a copy of it.

Either: uninstall Aureloo, and the phone removes the app's database with it. On an iPhone, touch and hold the Aureloo icon and choose Remove App → Delete App; Offload App would keep the data.

Or, on Android, to clear your data but keep the app: open Settings → Apps → Aureloo → Storage → Clear data. The app returns to the state it was in when you first installed it. An iPhone has no such setting, so there deleting the app is the way.

This is immediate and permanent. There is no undo, so if you want to keep your words, make sure Google Drive sync is connected and has just run — Profile → Google Drive sync → Sync now — before you clear anything.

Delete your Google Drive sync file

Only if you turned on Drive sync. If you never connected Drive, there is nothing here to delete. If you deleted your account in the app while it could still reach Drive, this is already done.

When sync is on, Aureloo keeps one file for each Aureloo account — aureloo-sync-<account id>.json — in a hidden application folder inside your Google Drive. Because it is in your account and Aureloo's permission does not let it see anything else in your Drive, only you can remove it — we have no way to reach it. Disconnecting Drive or signing out of Aureloo does not remove it.

  1. In Aureloo, disconnect Google Drive.
  2. Go to your Google Account → Data & privacy → Apps and services, find Aureloo, and remove both its access and its stored app data.

Google's own page for this is
myaccount.google.com/permissions. Removing the app data there deletes the sync file itself — and the file of any other Aureloo account connected to the same Drive; removing access only stops future syncing.

What happens on other devices

Deleting your account in the app clears the phone you did it on. If you used sync on more than one phone, each of the others still holds its own local copy, so do the phone step above on each of them.

Deleted items leave a hidden marker for 180 days so that a deletion on one device is not undone by another device re-uploading the item. These markers contain no personal information and are cleared automatically. Deleting the Drive file removes them along with everything else.

Purchases

Your purchase records at Google Play or the App Store stay. Google or Apple keeps them for its own tax and accounting purposes, we cannot delete them, and neither the in-app deletion nor an email request touches them. The app tells you the same thing before you confirm.

Your store account and your Aureloo account hold different halves of a purchase. The purchase record above belongs to the Google account or Apple Account that paid. The entitlement — the app's answer to is this person Pro? — is filed against your Aureloo account, so deleting the account gives Pro up with it. That combination is deliberate: a purchase follows the person rather than the handset, so nobody inherits your subscription by signing in on your phone.

It also means Pro cannot be restored onto a different Aureloo account. If you sign up again after deleting, Restore purchases in the Profile tab — or I already bought Pro on the Pro screen — will not bring Pro to the new account. If that is what you need, email support@aureloo.com with the order number from Google Play or from Apple's receipt, and we will look at it by hand.

The purchase service keeps its customer record: your user id and any purchases and gifts made on it, with no name, email address or payment details. Deleting your account in the app only disconnects your phone from that record; to have it removed as well, email privacy@aureloo.com.

Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription either, and we cannot cancel one for you — subscriptions are managed by the store, and a subscription you do not cancel keeps renewing. On Android, cancel it or ask for a refund in Google Play → Subscriptions, or at the same place in a browser:
play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions.

On an iPhone, cancel it in Settings → your name → Subscriptions, and ask Apple for a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
